Shame - What can Robbie and Gary teach you about forgiveness?

Wow - haven't Robbie and Gary come a long way since the break up of Take That. The roller coaster their lives have taken them on through very good times and not so good times and now here they are back together, singing a song called "Shame". What can they teach you about forgiveness!

Is it about time you let go of some wrongdoings that have happened to you? Is about time that you forgive someone for causing you pain and upset? This may feel hard to do, espeically if you have been holding on to these feelings for a long time.

Forgiveness is one of the best things you can give yourself. You can free yourself of bitterness and holding grudges. Imagine how light you will feel? Forgiveness of others can be especially hard when it is someone close to you, that you love or care about that has hurt you. Dwelling on what someone has done can cause you great pain, anger and sadness. If you let these feelings take hold of you they can result in you becoming more and more negative and leave you feeling less positive about life and can lead to depression and anxiety.

By embracing forgivness and moving on you may reap health benefits such as a lower blood pressure, decreased stress and tension in your body and mind, release of symptoms associated with depression, anxiety and pain, a decreased dependency on alcohol or other substances.

Remember forgiveness doesn't mean that you have said it's ok that the other person hurt you or that you have forgotten what happened. Forgiveness is about allowing yourself to move forward in a positive way, making sense of what has happened and ultimately freeing yourself from the pain that you incurred when the individual hurt you. By holding on to pain and hurt, you choose to constantly relive that negative experience, causing yourself more pain and anguish.

You have a choice! You can keep reliving the negative moments in your life OR move forward with your life and BE PRESENT in the here and now!

Watch the Robbie and Gary video. Look how unhappy they look at the beginning and the sense of openness and love that grows as they move through their emotions and "let go" of the resentment!!

The power of your mind

I recently attended a fantastic workshop which is all about the mind and how we are masters of our own destiny. You may have heard of the term “abundance” or may be familiar with the book or dvd “The Secret”. This is along the lines of what I am referring to.

The power to achieve all that we want to in life resides within ourselves. It can be hard to believe the truth in that statement when day to day it may seem like we are faced with barriers, problems, bad news, people getting in our way.......and anything else that you can blame for you not getting what you want from life. It may be a surprise but the biggest barrier and problem you have is you.

The workshop I attended encouraged me to think back to my childhood and what my dreams and goals were before the world had gotten too much of a grip on me and conditioned me to a “normal” or “acceptable” existence. Many memories and dreams I had once thought about and had forgotten came back to me. These included things I wanted to do or learn like be a professional dancer, playing the drums or speaking a foreign language to more personal things about when I was growing up and the influences that key people had in my life. When I looked at my goals and what I wanted to achieve it started to paint a picture to me of what I have done over the years and the possible reasons for them and where my life is taking me now. Retracing our path and our footsteps can be most useful in looking at where we are now and where we want to go.

My love and passion is yoga. What I realised shortly after attending the workshop is that everything we discussed was all about yoga i.e. “union”. In the west we tend to think of yoga as a physical exercise but yoga is truly about controlling and mastering the mind so that we are no longer a slave to it and our ego. That may seem odd when your only experience may have been getting on a mat and doing some postures but with persistence and discipline a new side to yoga can appear to even the most sceptical of people. I would like to remind you at this point that yoga isn’t a religion or some weird “hippy” past time, it is in fact a science, a SCIENCE OF YOUR MIND which dates back over 3000 years.

I cannot count the number of times when students come into my class and say “I’ll never be able to do that” “ I can’t do that”, look at the messages we send ourselves, and this is just on a yoga mat doing some postures! We tell ourselves messages like this all of the time.

“I’m not good enough” “I’m a fraud” “I don’t deserve.....”. If we choose to, we can programme ourselves not to have these limiting thoughts. If you can attain this then you can achieve your heart’s desires.

Dream big! Go on, I dare you.....imagine what you can do if there are no limits. Now ask yourself if what you dream about is something that you really want to do. If the answer is yes then the key to success resides within you and all is within your grasp. I am not saying that if you dream about having a Ferrari then one will magically appear but what I am saying is that if you have a true goal and purpose in life (which we all do, even if we haven’t found it yet!) then there are no limits to your potential and what you can achieve.

Another message I am often faced with when teaching is “It’s alright for you, you are flexible or strong”. I have to laugh when I hear these statements. If people could see me when I was a teenager I was pretty inflexible and in fact could just about touch my shins. What people fail to see is the hard work, commitment and effort that individuals undertake to attain goals or skills. Nothing just comes to us; it comes because we have an intention, desire or will and then take action to make it real. That often involves self discipline and persistence. Next time you hear yourself or someone else say “you get all the luck” or “you land in xxxx and come out smelling of roses”, think about it. That person has more than likely done one key thing that you haven’t and that is to make a decision about what they want and then take steps to achieving it. That’s not luck that’s purpose!

To quote from As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

“ALL that a person achieves and all that a person fails to achieve is the direct result of thinking. In a justly ordered universe, where loss of equipoise would mean total destruction, individual responsibility must be absolute”

Getting more of what you want in life is really down to you and how you perceive the world around you. You can choose to see life differently, see the positive rather than the negative. You have all the power in the world just waiting for you to wake up and unveil your true potential. The path isn’t easy, but no path worth pursuing ever is. You will have times when you doubt, times when you say I can’t do this, but ultimately you can and that is what makes the difference between achieving your desires or watching others achieve theirs.

Disciplines like YOGA and TAI CHI can aide you to achieve your physical goals but more importantly they can help you attain control and power over your thoughts and actions thereby leading you to achieve things in your life that maybe once you thought were impossible.

Dream big, have fun on the way, don’t take life too seriously and most of all listen to your heart.
